Free Crochet Pattern Sources

Most of the sources listed here require registration (it's for free but you'll need an email address), but it's well worth the short time you'll spend doing it.  Membership sites are marked by '(+)'.

My Top Picks: The Best Crochet Pattern Sites

# 1: Ravelry (+)
  • For one thing, it has a pattern database that's linked to the projects database, which means you can also take a look at the finished objects that were made using a specific pattern.  Another great thing about Ravelry is that it has an excellent (unparalleled) search utility that lets you sort through patterns according to project type and requirements (yarn weight, fiber type, hook size, etc).
# 2: Crochet Pattern Central
  • Basically a collection of thousands of links to free patterns available online, sorted according to project type. The upshot to browsing through this site is that I don't get tempted to buy patterns nor get frustrated when I find a gorgeous yet virtually unobtainable one.
# 3: Drops Design
  • Hundreds of free patterns, a lot of them so lovely it's hard to believe they're free.
# 4: Lion Brand Yarn (+)
  • Their Market Bag #70221A pattern is my go-to everyday bag, and if this were the only free pattern they offered on this site, I'd still put it on my top picks list. But favorite projects aside, I like that there are a lot of patterns here that are suitable for yarns that aren't so fancy (such as your regular worsted-weight acrylics).
# 5: Jessica Tromp
  • If you're interested in using crochet motifs for your construction and can work from a diagram and a schematic (as opposed to written row-by-row instructions), this site is an excellent resource. Check out the section on crochet boleros, the motifs there are really pretty.
# 6: Patons Yarns Free Patterns (+)
  • I found a good number of lovely, timeless pieces here. There seems to be something wrong with their search function though, as I can't find the ones I thought were nicest, like this, this, and this.
# 7: Berocco Yarn (+)
  • A lot of beautiful patterns being offered for free here too. Personally, though, I'm unable to make use of most of them as I prefer to work with thread and the ones here are for bulkier yarns. But if you don't mind recalculating figures, it's a great place to draw inspiration from.
# 8: NaturallyCaron.com Free Pattern Boutique (+)
  • Ditto as above.
# 9: Coats and Clark Free Crochet Projects (+)
  • Ditto as above.
# 10: Mypicot (+)
  • This is more a component library than a pattern archive, but it's a great tool for when you want to try your hand at making your own design.
